Advantages of Double Pane Windows

If you currently have single pane windows and are considering installing new windows in your home – you may be wondering what the real difference is between single and double pane. At Glass N Pane, we’re here to help you understand the pros and cons of each, and assist you in finding the perfect solution for your needs.

The single advantage of single pane
Simply put, there’s really only a single advantage to a single pane window – and that’s its cost. Commonly found in older homes, a single pane window is true to its name in that it’s a single layer of glass that fills the frame of your window. Because they offer little insulation, single pane windows are used more today for outdoor sheds, garages and other applications where a cheap fix is needed and insulation is lower priority.

The many advantages of double pane windows
Double pane windows are by far the preferred choice of homeowners, business owners and builders. And for many good reasons, including:

· Insulation & energy efficiency. Double pane glass will insulate your home far better than single pane. In cold weather, most of the heat is lost through your windows. However, in warmer weather the opposite is true. Your AC is doing its best to keep your house cool, but single pane windows let that cool air warm up, putting extra stress on your AC — and extra dollars on your energy bill. Replacing your single pane with double pane windows can commonly result in lowering your energy bills by as much as 50%.
· Minimal condensation. When you have cool air outside and warm air inside, the moisture in your home will condense onto the cold windows. Most of the time, this won’t be a major problem, as you’ll just get a fine mist that will soon evaporate. However, on cold winter days, it can result in puddles of water on your sills. The double pane window design means that the inner pane of glass is well insulated from the outer pane, so the window rarely gets cold enough to cause condensation.
· Noise reduction. Double pane windows are excellent at reducing noise. The actual reduction will vary depending on the type of window, but you can typically expect external noise to be reduced by 20% to 50% — and the difference will be immediately noticeable. Your home will be quieter and you’ll get better sleep!
· Increased home security. Single pane windows are easy for an intruder to smash. On the other hand, double pane windows are made to much higher standards, and are subsequently more difficult to break. They’re also more resilient in cases of accidents: a stray baseball or children’s toy will go right through a single pane window. With double pane windows, however, the outer pane may break, but the inner pane will remain intact, or will simply crack. You may still have to replace the window, but you won’t have to do it immediately, because you’re not exposing your home to the elements. In addition, there’s no security risk — and you won’t have bits of glass all over your house.
· Weather protection. Single pane windows break easily when hit by flying debris – or can be pulled apart by wind pressure. Double pane windows, particularly impact-resistant windows, will protect your home and belongings from wind, hail, sleet and rain.
· Resale value. As a home-owner, you’re naturally concerned about the value of your property – and double pane windows are a major selling point. Your prospective buyer can look forward to all the benefits you’ve enjoyed: a quiet, safe and secure home with low utility bills and a pleasant interior comfort level. Studies show that homeowners typically recoup up to 80% of the cost of double pane glass, making it a very worthwhile investment!
